SCIENCE
Day 1
Adapted from SV eco-trail – “What’s Your Home Like?”
Singapore boasts an internationally recognised Wetlands reserve in the form of Sungei Buloh Wetlands Reserve. This gazetted area in the northern region of Singapore is an important stopover for migratory birds, providing them with food. The wetlands also consists of a rich biodiversity, including the Brugueira hanesii, also called 'Berus mata buaya' (which means 'Eye of the Crocodile' in Malay). It is considered the rarest mangrove tree in the world due to its very limited distribution. It is estimated that there are only 200 of such trees left in the wild worldwide, of which four are found in Singapore. The mangroves in the wetlands also play an important part by sheltering the coastline from storms, tsunamis and increase in sea levels by dissipating the energy of the waves.
You can assess the website for more information on Sungei Buloh Wetlands Reserve and the biodiversity (flora and fauna) found there.
TASK 1
After reading the above website about Sungei Buloh Wetlands Reserve and its flora and fauna (plants and animals), come up with a FOOD WEB of the organisms found within Sungei Buloh Wetlands Reserve and submit through your (individual class portal: Edmodo, google docs, etc). Your food web does not need to cover every organism in Sungei Buloh.
You may visit these other websites to find out more about other habitats.
Instructions for Task 1.
1. After you
have accessed the website for Sungei Buloh Wetlands Reserve, click on the link ‘BIODIVERSITY’ on the homepage.
2. Next, you
should see a page with the links ‘FLORA’
as well as ‘FAUNA’. These are the organisms that can be found in Sungei
Buloh Reserve. Explore these links and read the information given about these
interesting organisms that can be found in our own backyard!
3. Design a
food-web with the organisms that you have read about (using Word, PowerPoint
slides, etc) and submit via your class portal. (Edmodo, blog, etc)
TASK 2
An adaptation is a way an animal's body helps it survive, or live, in its environment. Animals depend on their physical features to help them obtain food, keep safe, build homes, withstand weather, and attract mates. These physical features are called structural adaptations. They make it possible for the animal to live in a particular place and in a particular way. Another form is known as behavioural adaptation. Behavioural adaptations are what organisms do to survive. For example , bird calls and migration are behavioural adaptations.
Check out this websites about animal adaptations.
YOUR TASK
In your groups, select an adaptation from the BBC website (http://www.bbc.co.uk/nature/adaptations/), e.g. – mimicry, and discuss how the organisms make use of that adaptation and help them survive in their habitat.
Instructions for Task 2.
1. After you
have accessed the website, http://www.bbc.co.uk/nature/adaptations/,
you should see ‘Animal and Plant Adaptation and Behaviour’
2. On this page,
you should see many wildlife pictures with ‘labels’ below the pictures. By
clicking on the label, e.g ‘Chemical tolerant’ will lead you to another page
where there are video clips showcasing this type of animal adaptation.
3. Choose a
category of animal behaviour and discuss online with your classmates about how
the animals survive in their habitat.
